Canon: Free!
Canon Point: End of season one
Age: 16
History: Wiki link
Personality:
The first thing anyone would notice about Nagisa is his overwhelmingly bright and happy personality. Since he's the youngest of the group, he tends to look at everything with that optimism and wonder that a child would when they first see something new. He gets excited over even the smallest things and his good mood carries the group through some of their more troubling times.
But being the youngest also means that Nagisa is a lot more immature than the rest of the bunch. He's prone to quick mood changes, almost like a kid who was happy until their parents told them they couldn't have a toy they just saw on the shelf. Nagisa will start off being excited about an event or idea he had, but if anyone shows disinterest, he's quick to begin nagging until he convinces them to go along with the idea. And if he can't get something to go his way after all that whining, his mood drops to being gloomy at his defeat before perking right back up again at the notion of another idea. As an example, before Nagisa was with the rest of the boys on a swim team, he ran up to Rin asking him if he'd let him be a part of the group. When Rin said no, Nagisa bugged and bugged him, saying how he'd swim any style and to just let him join. It got to the point where Nagisa's nagging finally made Rin give in, resulting in an overly excited Nagisa trying his best to swim the breaststroke to impress him. And even more notable example is when the group is in need of a fourth member in order to have their new swim club be official and allow them to join in tournaments. Nagisa honed in on Rei Ryugazaki and clung to him until he consented to joining. This includes asking him on numerous occasions, following him on his run to school and even taking the rest of the club to Rei's track and field practices to show him off.
Nagisa could also be considered rude or inconsiderate and has been shown to have poor manners, often talking with his mouth full or being overly noisy and messy. He also tends to cling to people quickly and automatically assume they are on more informal terms than should be reasonable, considering the amount of time he's actually known them. The most notable example of this is how he immediately uses everyone's first names. It's a running joke in the show that all the boys on the swim team have notably girly given names and would rather not be referred to by them. Upon locating his old friends on his first day at Iwatobe, Nagisa immediately begins calling them by these names, despite Haruka specifically asking him not to. Another instance is when Nagisa was attempting to recruit Rei Ryugazaki to be the fourth member of their team. He refers to him briefly by his last name, but the moment he learns that his first name is Rei, he switches to it, even though the two barely know one another. Even their club manager, Gou, constantly yells at him to call her Kou instead, hating the fact that she has a more masculine name. Nagisa continuously uses her actual name even after she's just corrected him.
Nagisa is also known to tease and poke fun at people. He does so with Makoto when they sneak into the abandoned swim center they went to as children. Makoto is notoriously skittish in potentially scary scenarios and Nagisa hypes up the spookiness of going into an old, rundown building by saying he brought special salt to keep the spirits away. When the four of them were doing their summer training regimen of swimming between four islands, they ended up abandoned on one and spent the time playing silly truth or dare type games. The person who was it was chosen by rolling a hand-made die and Nagisa specifically put Rei's name on the die three times claiming that it was merely because Rei was Rei. In other words, he wanted to see Rei get more flustered by getting chosen more often. It's never done with any malicious intent as he sees it more as having fun with his friends, even if it might get annoying to them.
Above all this is how determined Nagisa is to make things happen for him and his friends. The entire reason he enrolled at Iwatobe High School was to get the chance to swim with his old teammates again. When he found out that the school no longer had a swim team and that the pool wasn't even used anymore, it was is idea to try and set up a swim club. He got Makoto and Haru interested in the idea and spent much of his spare time trying to recruit others to join the club, even though no one seemed interested. And even when they were approved and were given the task of cleaning up the abandoned school pool, he wasn't turned off by the idea and quickly got to work, dragging the others with him. So, even though he can be immature and overly excitable, his intentions are always good ones and in the end, just wants to have an enjoyable time with his friends doing the things they love.
Abilities: Like his fellow teammates, Nagisa is a strong swimmer. His specialty is in the breaststroke which he took on when he was in elementary school after Rin relented into racing him. Nagisa was behind most of that first race, but as Rin noticed, after the turn Nagisa would suddenly speed up and close the gap between him and his component. It was as though Nagisa's arms were suddenly becoming elongated and pushing him faster through the water. This ability is even more beneficial towards Nagisa's swimming considering he is quite short in comparison to the rest of his teammates. This would normally leave him at a disadvantage, but his pick up towards the end of a race really helps to negate that.
Strengths: optimistic, friendly, determined, caring, dedicated
Weaknesses: childish, intrusive, bad manners, whiny, noisy
God/Shinki: god
Why?: Nagisa likes to keep the people around him happy and is very persistent when it comes to getting things done. If he takes on prayers for people, he won't stop until they've been fulfilled and the client is happy.
Top 3 Choices: Azeban (Native American trickster god - more of pranks and teasing instead of actual malicious intent), Sedna (Inuit goddess of the sea and marine animals), Nootaikok (Inuit god of icebergs and glaciers)
God Type: He's not going to focus much on what prior incarnations of his god did, but will more take what his god stands for and represents extremely literally. He'll also be quick to bring other shinki on as his own if he wants them. Kind of like how he disregarded the fact that Rei was already part of the track and field team and insisted that he join the swim club instead.
Power: Elasticity. Not to the point of say, a Stretch Armstrong doll, but more being able to make up for where his short stature would hinder him.
